Historically Inspired

Robert's artwork is a collective inspiration of styles from some of his favorite artists. His works tend to be very dark in overall appearance like Rembrandt, brush strokes can clearly be seen and are intentional like those of French Impressionists Manet, Monet, and Van Gogh, color chaos and randomness provide their own beauty like Pollock, and simplistic yet detailed separations of a few simple colors combine to create more recognizable forms like Pittsburgh native artist Andy Warhol. Robert, in full understanding of the message from his childhood idol Bob Ross, does make mistakes, but sometimes they result in beautiful artwork. Which according to Ross, makes them, "Happy Little Accidents" and not mistakes at all!

To determine the proper size of each piece, the subject is as important as what color the main focus of the final work will be. Commissioned pieces require the collector to be a part of this process.

Timeless planning is no match for getting paint down on a small sample canvas and letting the paint tell you if the colors selected will guide you to the desired completed project. They may show you that even the best laid plans are not certain.

There are times where every brush stroke is intended, planned, and results in success. Other times, the best results come from trusting the paint and the process and seeing what happens when you give up control.
